Departments
- BuildingResponsibilities include building, plumbing, heating, swimming pool, septic system, and sign permits. The building department is also responsible for by-law enforcement, building inspections, building code information, business & lottery licensing.
- Clerks DepartmentResponsibilities include Council and Committee meetings; issuing marriage licences; registration of births and deaths; conducting municipal elections and compiling voters lists; maintaining corporate records and archives; assessment rolls; by-law information; and providing commissioner of oath services.

- EngineeringResponsibilities include: design and construction of all roads, sidewalks; bridges and sewers, transportation engineering, GIS, topographical mapping, infrastructure management, and engineering reviews for subdivisions, site plans and rezonings.
- EnvironmentResponsibilities include managing environmental issues, policy development and coordinating corporate initiatives to green city operations
- FinanceResponsibilities include financial and accounting management including budgets; tenders and general purchasing; collection of taxes and other revenues; tax certificates and assessment review.
- FireResponsibilities include the prevention and supression of fires; the provision of emergency and rescue services; fire prevention education and fire safety inspections.
- Human ResourcesResponsibilities include employment; staff/labour relations; employee benefits; health and safety; pay research and staff training and development.
- Information Technology ServicesInformation Technology Services (ITS) manages all computer related issues for the City. This includes systems integration, upgrading, special applications, training, hardware and software needs. ITS is also responsible for the City's voice messaging system.
- LegalResponsibilities include preparing contracts; negotiating development and subdivision agreements; representing the City before the Ontario Municipal Board and courts.
- Parks and RecreationResponsibilities include all matters relating to recreation and culture services, parks, facilities, special events, community centres, direct and indirect recreational programs.
- Planning DepartmentResponsibilities include Official Plan/planning policy intended to provide guidance for the development of the City; rezoning applications; subdivision and condominium applications; parkway belt applications; Niagara Escarpment Commission applications; and site plan applications.
- Roads And Parks MaintenanceResponsibilities include maintenance of parks & playgrounds, streets, sidewalks and storm sewers; traffic and street lights; Greenwood Cemetery; forestry, snow clearing, traffic signs and creek maintenance.
- Transit And TrafficThe Transit & Traffic Department is responsible for the delivery of various road related services. These services include, the Traffic Signal System, Traffic Services, Parking By-law Enforcement, Downtown Parking and, of course, Burlington Transit. Burlington Transit operates the City's public transportation system and charters within Burlington. Burlington Transit links with other transportation systems such as the Hamilton Street Railway, Oakville Transit and GO Transit.
