City Council

City Manager

Finance
Responsibilities include Financial and Accounting Management including budgets; financial reporting; tenders and general purchasing; collection of taxes and other revenues; tax certificates and assessment review.

Human Resources
Responsibilities include employment; staff/labour relations; employee benefits; health and safety; pay research and staff training and development.

Information Technology Services
Information Technology Services (IT Services) manages all computer related issues for the City. This includes systems integration, upgrading, special applications, training, hardware and software needs. ITS is also responsible for the City's voice messaging system.

Legal
Responsibilities include preparing contracts; negotiating development and subdivision agreements; representing the City before the Ontario Municipal Board and courts.

Community Services Division

Clerks
Services provided include support for Council and Committees; issuing marriage licences; registering deaths; conducting municipal elections; maintaining corporate records, assessment rolls and by-laws; and providing commissioner of oath and community relations services.

Fire
Responsibilities include the prevention and suppression of fires; the provision of emergency and rescue services; fire prevention education and fire safety inspections.

Parks and Recreation
Responsibilities include all matters relating to recreation and culture services, parks, facilities, special events, community centres, direct and indirect recreational programs.

Development and Infrastructure Division  

Corporate Strategic Initiatives

Environment
Responsibilities include managing environmental issues, policy development and coordinating corporate initiatives to green city operations.

Engineering
Responsibilities include: design and construction of all roads, sidewalks; bridges and sewers, transportation engineering, GIS, topographical mapping, infrastructure management, and engineering reviews for subdivisions, site plans and re-zonings.

Planning and Building
Responsibilities include building, plumbing, heating, swimming pool, septic system, and sign permits. The Planning and Building Department is also responsible for by-law enforcement, building inspections, building code information, business & lottery licensing in addition to, Official Plan/planning policy intended to provide guidance for the development of the City; rezoning applications; subdivision and condominium applications; parkway belt applications; Niagara Escarpment Commission applications; and site plan applications.

Roads and Parks Maintenance
Responsibilities include maintenance of parks & playgrounds, streets, sidewalks and storm sewers; traffic and street lights; Greenwood Cemetery; forestry, snow clearing, traffic signs and creek maintenance.

Burlington Transit
Manages the transit route network including scheduling, operations and maintenance of transit vehicles. Burlington Transit also manages the "Handi-van" para-transit system.

Transportation Services
Transportation Services is responsible for the delivery of various road related services. These services include: the Traffic Signal System, Traffic Services, Transportation Planning, Parking By-law Enforcement and Downtown Parking.
