FIRE SAFETY ALERT
UNAPPROVED VENT-FREE FIREPLACES SOLD IN ONTARIO - SIGNIFICANT CARBON MONOXIDE RISK
Recently the Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) became aware of unapproved vent-free fireplaces manufactured by ProCom that were being sold at local Liquidation World stores. These heating appliances, which are typically fueled by natural gas, operate without a chimney, flue or vent.
According to the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) these units are not approved for sale, installation or use in Canada, as there is no Canadian standard that applies to this product type. These appliances require sufficient combustion air to ensure complete combustion of the fuel, and no production of carbon monoxide (CO). Due to the tightly constructed homes typically found in Canada, this appliance could pose a significant CO risk.
Local Liquidation World stores have advised that these appliances were supplied by their head office and that they could be sold throughout Ontario. TSSA has issued a provincial offence order to Liquidation World’s head office to discontinue the sale of these appliances. However, this product has been available for sale in stores for a while, so many may have already been sold.
Consumers who have already purchased such a unit are advised to return this unapproved product to their local Liquidation World store and inquire as to how they may be reimbursed.
Similar alerts on this product have already been issued by various fire departments throughout Ontario.
If you have concerns you may have purchased one of these products, discontinue use immediately! If you have any futher questions or concerns, please contact Burlington Fire Prevention at firedepartment@burlington.ca or via phone at (905) 637-9536.
ONLY A WORKING FIRE ALARM CAN ALERT YOU TO A FIRE IN YOUR HOME! DO YOU HAVE A WORKING SMOKE ALARM?
The Ontario Fire Code mandates the installation of smoke alarms in all residences.
Smoke alarms MUST be installed and maintained outside all sleeping areas and on every level of a residence (including a basement). The Fire Code also states that "No person shall intentionally disable a smoke alarm so as to make it inoperable." Anyone who intentionally disables a smoke alarm is guilty of a provincial offence and is subject to a fine.
- FIRE SAFETYFire Safety is an important issue for all of us. Residential fires are responsible for a tragic number of deaths, injuries and millions of dollars in property damage each year. Most people will never face a major fire but don't think it will never happen to you! Statistics show that your life will be affected by fire three times, either through personal experience or the experiences of family and friends. Tragedy can be prevented by awareness and vigilance.
- PERSONAL EMERGENCY PREPARDNESSEmergencies and disasters can happen at any time. Utilities can be out, roads closed, and crucial supplies unavailable. While local, provincial and federal officials prepare for emergencies, individuals can plan to be prepared at home and at work.
