Spencer Smith Park Seawall Inspection Learn more
The Spencer Smith Park Seawall provides shoreline protection along the length of Spencer Smith Park. The original structure was built in 1915, as an offshore breakwater to protect Lakeshore Road. In the 1960’s, the area between the breakwater and Lakeshore Road was filled to create Spencer Smith Park. In the late 1990’s, the breakwater was reconstructed including the addition of a steel sheet pile wall to create the seawall as it exists today.
To ensure the integrity and longevity of the seawall and to plan for any required capital improvements, the City has commissioned yearly inspections since 2003 to monitor its condition and identify any areas in need of repair. This has included above water inspections on a yearly basis and below water inspections every 2-3 years.
In early October, a below and above water inspection will be carried out. The inspections will be performed by a dive team, operating primarily from a workboat alongside the seawall. The inspections will take approximately 1 week to complete.
