Public Access Defibrillation Units in City Facilities

In October, 2004 all City of Burlington arenas and the Burlington Seniors’ Centre became heart-safe facilities with the installation of Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) units. The units, which provide a “Shock in a Box”, are also available at city pools, City Hall and Tyandaga golf course.

The PAD units in Burlington are automated external defibrillators (AEDs), manufactured by Zoll Medical Corporation. The units can be operated by anyone as the AED provides audio prompts to assist the rescuer. The ability to analyze the heart’s electrical function is programmed into the AED, and voice and text prompts guide rescuers through the appropriate CPR and defibrillation steps, as necessary. The machine also records valuable medical information that will be downloaded by city staff and transferred to Joseph Brant Hospital. 

The City of Burlington would like to encourage citizens, particularly in groups utilizing arenas and pools on a regular basis, to sign up for the CPR and PAD courses offered through parks and recreation, under the direction of Joseph Brant Hospital. PAD is a joint initiative between parks and recreation and the fire department.  Burlington is currently a leader in Halton Region with regard to installing PAD units in its facilities. PAD units can be found in the following city facilties:
