Partners for Climate Protection
The Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program is a partnership between the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) that helps municipal governments reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The community benefits for municipal participation in PCP include:
- Cut waste leading to unnecessary energy expenditures;
- Reduce air pollution that leads to smog, acid rain, climate change, and health problems; and
- Create jobs and stimulate community economic development.
To track progress, PCP encourages each participating community to commit to achieving five milestones. The City of Burlington has completed Milestone One: Taking Stock. To achieve this milestone, the City completed a greenhouse gas inventory (profile of energy use and emissions) using PCP software for both municipal operations and the community for the base year 1994 (or year with best available data), and forecasted energy use and emissions for the next 10 or 20 years for municipal operations and the community. The remaining four milestones are setting an emissions reduction target, developing a local action plan, implementing the local action plan, and monitoring progress and reporting results.
