The GTA-Clean Air Council
Staff at the City of Burlington are represented on the GTA-Clean Air Council (GTA-CAC). The GTA-CAC is an intergovernmental working group with a mission to help reduce smog across the GTA. The GTA-CAC is also involved in organizing the Smog Summits that began in 2000. At the June 8th, 2005 Smog Summit in Toronto City Hall, several governmental bodies signed the 2005 Toronto and Region Intergovernmental Declaration. Members committed to several actions to improve air quality during 2005-2006. New events for the 2005 Smog Summit included:
- The Fresh Air Fair on June 4th - a free, family event
- "Tell us your air pollution solution" - an essay writing contest for grade 5 students with winners awarded at the Fresh Air Fair
- A pre-Summit Air Quality Sampling exercise in a few municipalities on May 30th measuring ultra fine particles and fine particulate matter resulting from vehicle emissions.
- The launch of Clean Air Online - The GTA's One-Stop-Shop for Information on Clean Air Action.
Plans are underway for the sixth Smog Summit. Stay tuned for more details.
