Home Energy Improvements

There are many financial incentive programs available to residents for home energy improvements. These incentives generally revolve around the ecoENERGY Retrofit program launched in April 2007 replacing the former EnerGuide for Houses program that was cancelled in May 2006. The $220 million financial incentive program, which will run until March 31, 2011, will help Canadians retrofit their homes, buildings and industrial processes.

In order to be eligible for the homeowners grant, a Natural Resources Canada certified energy advisor will have to be contacted to conduct a residential energy assessment service. While the total cost of this two stage audit is approximately $350, the Province of Ontario through the Home Energy Audit Program will subsidize up to 50% of the cost to a maximum of $150. The auditor will highlight where energy improvements can be made to your home. You have 18 months to carry out whatever improvements you choose. Your home will then be reassessed. The rebate will be based on the improved energy rating of your home.

Residents are eligible for up to $5,000 in federal rebates and up to $5,000 in provincial rebates. The homeowner may also apply for incentives offered by other organizations including:
