Waste Management

On December 14, 2009, Council has approved a corporate waste reduction strategy towards zero waste.

  • The initial focus for waste reduction has been on Burlington City Hall through the implementation of battery recycling in January 2009 and green carts in 2010. The next step will be to look at the other municipal facilities, four of which already have battery recycling, to improve waste reduction. Implementation of the program is being done in consultation with the Region of Halton.
  • Following a successful pilot project that took place at Tansley Woods Park with 3 recycling/waste stations, an additional 60 stations were installed in 14 city parks. The high capacity below-grade side-by-side stations come in two sizes: the smaller version holds 1,300 litres of recyclables and 1,300 litres of waste while the larger version holds 3,000 litres of recyclables and 3,000 litres of waste. The 63 stations (126 containers), located at major parks near picnic areas and sports fields, provide access to recycling and the opportunity to divert an estimated 22,400 kilograms of recyclables from the waste stream. More.

In Burlington, waste management is the responsibility of the Region of Halton. To find out more about recycling, composting, the household hazardous waste (HHW) depot and alternate HHW drop-off locations, waste events  and more, please click here.
