Electrical Safety and Water Damage

Emergencies can be described as many different types of sudden events that can lead to unsafe conditions.  The fire department is called to respond to a wide variety of emergencies including those where flooding occurs due to extreme weather conditions or failure of domestic plumbing or sprinkler systems inside buildings.  Many concerns arise during sudden floods related to the fact that electical service is still active in the buiding and may be impacted by the water.

It is also a well known fact that water and electicity do not mix and can result in serious injury or death.

The Electical Safety Authority (ESA) has prepared a guide entitled Electircal Safety and Water Damage, which provides information on various topics including how to prepare if you are given a warning of imminent flood potential and also how to deal with electrical equipment during a flood and after the water has subsided.

Review the following points and find more information at the attached link to the ESA document.

  • If flooding is anticipated, turn off the main electrical service switch, if it is safe to do so.
  • If time permits, move as many electrical appliances and equipment to floors or levels above the anticipated flood level.
  • Stay clear of submerged power lines or electrical equipment that may still be energized.
  • Do not re-energize any electrical service or equipment that has been submerged or exposed to water until it has been checked by a licensed electrical contractor.
