Heritage Umbrella Group (HUG)
Background
The Heritage Umbrella Group (H.U.G.) held their first meeting on October 16, 2001. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a co-ordinating approach among groups with a similar interest and to explore the potential for a joint effort that would carry greater influence.
Mandate
The Heritage Umbrella Group (HUG) is established as a citizen committee to Burlington City Council to facilitate collaboration of the various organizations represented to preserve, protect, and promote Burlington’s heritage. The committee reports to Burlington City Council through the Community Services Committee.
Responsibilities and Objectives
To enhance public awareness of heritage issues and to support the safeguarding of heritage resources, HUG will:
- Speak with a collective voice in order to advise and influence Burlington’s decision-makers, particularly in processes such as the City of Burlington strategic plan and development of the municipal Official Plan and Zoning By-law
- Plan and implement an annual Burlington Heritage Week, including the Beach Canal Lighthouse Group, United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada, Bronte Creek Provincial Park, Halton District School Board, Halton Catholic District School Board, Paletta Lakefront Park, and Burlington Art Centre.
- Assist City staff in developing content for the City’s website related to heritage within the City of Burlington.
- Assist City staff by contributing to the development of a database for public information about the heritage responsibilities and resources of each of the participating organizations
- Distribute relevant information to Burlington residents through appropriate local events
- Maintain ongoing dialogue with the Council representative about the mandate, annual priorities and accomplishments of HUG
- Work with the assigned staff to meet the mandate of the committee and develop an achievable annual work plan, including communications and budgets.
