19th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive
| Mayor Cam Jackson along with the Burlington Professional Firefighters Assoc. and Salvation Army Food Services announce the kick-off for the 2008 Thanksgiving Food Drive October 8 - 15, 2008. |
Our community has supported the needy for 19 years by reaching out with heart and hand to assist individuals and families offering a way to help supplement their monthly food budget. This is made possible through a coalition of two agencies: the Salvation Army Family Services and Partnership West Family Support Network.
“At this time of year, to be thankful, many of us reflect on all the gifts around us of family, good health and good homes. There are many less fortunate who struggle from day to day acquiring even the basic necessities of life, unexpected school expenses for their children and increased utility bills which results in not enough money to bring food to their tables throughout the winter months,” said Mayor Jackson.
The following organizations have shown their strong financial support during 2008. These generous contributors are featured on our donor bag as “Leadership Sponsors” and they are:
Ladies Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 60, Burlington Lions Club, Stanmech Technologies Inc., Burlington Professional Firefighters Association, Rotary Club of Burlington North and two Burlington residents who have donated anonymously.
Special thanks to Food Share’s Community Sponsors: the Burlington Post and the Burlington Professional Firefighters Association. Community awareness is critical for the biannual food drive appeals, and the Burlington Post has been a pillar of support, providing all the advertising at no cost and the donor bag distribution at a substantively reduced cost. The Burlington Firefighters not only support Food Share financially but also provide drop-off locations at the fire halls and assist with food pickups throughout the community.
The donor shopping list, in order of greatest need, includes: canned fish and meat; canned fruit; peanut butter; pre-packaged dinner mixes; dry and canned pasta; canned juice; and toiletries. Food donations can be dropped off at all area grocery stores and local fire halls throughout the drive. The public is encouraged to help replenish the shelves by filling a donor bag and donating it in one of these drop-off locations. Please make financial donations payable to:
