New City Park

In 2002 the City purchased a 67-hectare (166 acre) parcel of land at the corner of Kerns Road and Dundas Street for the development of a multi-use park. It is a spectacular site, located prominently on the edge of the Niagara Escarpment adjacent to Kerncliff Park. An extensive review, including Technical Studies and a Master Plan was completed and endorsed by Council in December 2007.

The Master Plan includes 5 multi-use playfields, 2 baseball fields, open space areas, a pavilion, playgrounds, natural areas, a pond/wetland and trails including the Bruce Trail, which traverses the site. Existing natural features include woodlots, karst features and hedgerows and will be protected. Carolinian and other native hardwood trees will be planted to enhance the site’s natural landscape in keeping with the Niagara Escarpment Plan.

Next steps are to continue working with the Niagara Escarpment Commission and other regulatory agencies to finalize the Master Plan and prepare for implementation of the park. The first stage of development will include a parking lot that will provide access to the Bruce Trail. The remaining facilities will be constructed in stages over the long term, to provide high quality sportsfields and a range of opportunities for both passive and active recreation within the natural beauty of the Niagara Escarpment.
