Sherwood Forest Park included in 2015 Pan Am Bid proposal

For Immediate Release: Feb. 18, 2009

BURLINGTON, ON – Today, the 2015 Pan Am Games bid organization, Bidco, announced that Sherwood Forest Park has been included in the final venue strategy for the 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games bid. In the strategy, Sherwood Forest Park has been listed as a site for football (soccer).

“No other city in Ontario is better positioned to host soccer than Burlington,” said Mayor Cam Jackson. “We have a new senior turf field, plans to develop Sherwood Park as a soccer centre of excellence and the enthusiasm and commitment of our local volunteers. We have some of the best young players our province has ever produced right here in Burlington with a strong chance of competing for Canada in the 2015 Pan Am Games as a result of the strength and support of our community’s commitment to soccer development.”

Over the next few weeks city staff will be working with the bid organizers to determine further details on the city’s involvement in the games bid. A report will be brought forward for Burlington City Council’s consideration at the April 1, 2009 Community and Corporate Services Committee that will include program and facility details, financial requirements, and a community engagement plan. Council will then have to make a decision on the city’s continued involvement in the bid process.
