BURLINGTON, ON – The City of Burlington and Service Clubs of Burlington specifically Aldershot Lions, Central Lions, Optimists, Royal Canadian Naval Association, The Rotary Clubs of Burlington: Burlington, Burlington Central, Burlington Lakeshore and Burlington North are pleased to announce Wilhemina Wahidi as Burlington’s Citizen of the Year. The award recognizes devoted and energetic service by an individual who makes an exemplary contribution to the community.
“Wilhemina (Mina) brings hope to our community through her volunteerism and leadership. She has made a real and very positive difference in the lives of many citizens in our city,” said Mayor Cam Jackson. “Our community is a better place because of the tremendous efforts of Mina and organizations such as the Compassion Society who recognize a need and work tirelessly with a spirit of kindness and care to fill that need.”
Mina has dedicated her time to improving the welfare of those living in poverty in Burlington by initially starting a clothing share from its humble beginnings into what has since evolved into The Compassion Society, a not-for-profit organization. The Compassion Society serves about 100 men, women and children needing assistance with food and clothing.
Mina will receive her award at the Civic Recognition Awards ceremony held at the Burlington Convention Centre on May 14. Other award categories include Arts Person of the Year; Junior Citizen of the Year; Community Service Award; Environmental Award; and Senior Person of the Year.
The Civic Recognition Awards recognize Burlington residents who make Burlington a better place to work, live or play. For more information about the May 14 event or to buy tickets, call Suzanne Whitehead at 905-335-7600, ext. 7493 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org
