Upper Middle Road – Grade Separation (Railway underpass)

Upper Middle Road at Canadian National Rail Crossing - Road / Rail Grade Separation

The construction of the Upper Middle Road Grade Separation, located at the Canadian National Railway crossing west of Appleby Line, is proceeding on schedule. Our contractor, New Alliance Ltd., has completed the rail bridge and completed construction of the south half (east bound lanes) of the new Upper Middle Road (UMR) which pass under the bridge.

This project is now entering its final stage. Remaining to be completed is the construction of north half of Upper Middle Road, (under the new bridge including sidewalks and streetlighting) and landscaping. Road construction is anticipated to be completed October 19, 2009.

Final Stage Landscaping

The landscape design has been developed in coordination with the City of Burlington’s Roads and Parks Maintenance Department to ensure long term maintenance concerns were mitigated. The design was developed under the constraints of the slopes being “no mow” as the steep nature of the slopes creates a safety hazard for mowing equipment. Groundcovers, perennials, grasses and shrubs have been used to vegetate the slopes with the intention of keeping maintenance requirements to a minimum. Drip irrigation will be incorporated into the median and the planting beds on the slopes. The concept of flowing ribbon-like swath following the slopes has been detailed using perennials, grasses and shrubs chosen for their colour, kinetic qualities and hardiness. Trees for the site, over 300 in total, have been chosen and placed to act as living sculpture, with interesting texture and colour. The entire site has been given a colour scheme which changes with the seasons.

The installation of the landscaping is heavily time and weather dependent. Limited planting will be completed this fall (after the final roadworks are complete) with the balance of the plant material to be placed in the spring of 2010.
