For Immediate Release - July 9, 2009
BURLINGTON, ON- The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is inviting community-minded people to apply to serve a two-year term on its Board of Directors, contributing to strategic planning and centre operations.
“The board is looking for skilled people who will demonstrate their dedication to the arts and to the Burlington community,” said board chair Keith Strong. “This is a great opportunity to make a positive contribution to our city.”
The board’s role is to develop and monitor a long-term plan, direct fundraising efforts, develop financial stability, set up policies to govern the centre’s operation, and promote the value of the centre to the community. Candidates should have strong skills in marketing, fundraising, governance or finance, and may have a background in the entertainment industry as well as previous board member experience and an awareness of community needs.
The board meets monthly on a weekday from 8 to 10 a.m. The total time commitment is five or six hours a month.
The Burlington Performing Arts Centre is expected to open in 2011, generating economic spin-offs that include new tourism and convention opportunities, the creation of new jobs and the encouragement of a pedestrian- friendly downtown core.
When completed it will be an excellent venue for productions, receptions, exhibitions, community functions and civic events. A LEED-certified building (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), it is destined to be the first stand-alone green performing arts centre in Ontario.
