City approves design guidelines for Old Lakeshore Road

For Immediate Release: August 5, 2009

BURLINGTON, ON –The City of Burlington recently approved urban design guidelines for the Old Lakeshore Road Precinct near Brant Street at Lakeshore that will guide new development into the future.

“The concepts for Old Lakeshore provide for continued expansion of the public’s ability to experience close access to Lake Ontario. At the same time it allows for reasonable and careful development,” said Ward 2 Councillor Peter Thoem. “This provides two key benefits—opportunities for people to live downtown, and more and easy access to our most precious resource—the lake.”

Like other municipalities across Ontario, the City of Burlington must respond to legislation that created the Provincial Growth Plan. To comply with this provincial plan, Halton Region must double in population and employment by 2031, with Burlington taking on its share of this growth.

“The urban design guidelines approved recently by City Council will ensure that developers create high-quality buildings while respecting existing sites that have historical significance to the community,” said Bruce Krushelnicki, Director of Planning and Building. “The guidelines are an enhancement to the city’s Official Plan, which sets out where and how the city grows, and are the product of public consultation that began in 2007.”

Working with Conservation Halton, the city will provide access to the waterfront at Old Lakeshore Road as it has in other city locations. In Burlington, 12 waterfront parks and trails totalling nearly 700,000 square metres are available for public use, from Burloak Waterfront Park in the east to LaSalle Park and Marina in the west.

The City of Burlington is dedicated to preserving the city’s history and has identified 11 properties in the Old Lakeshore Road precinct as having cultural heritage value.
