MOVE TO THE RIGHT FOR SIRENS AND LIGHTS, PULL OVER PLEASE (P-O-P)
Please help the Burlington Fire Deparment. If you or somone you love is in need of emergency assistance, help us get there. It is as simple as moving your vehicle to right for passing sirens and lights.
Many people panic or simply do not adhere to the rules of the road for approaching emergency vehicles. The law is specific; "drivers' must yeild to the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle". The failure to do so can cause serious accidents and/or delays. The cooperation of ALL vehicles is essential.
Here are some simple guidlines to remember when you hear a siren and look up to see emergency vehicle lights flashing in your review mirror:
As soon as possible, pull your vehicle to the right and come to a complete stop. If you are travelling on a high-speed road or highway and there is no room to stop, pull over to the right as soon as you can and slow down as much as possible, while remaining safe. If you are stopped at an intersection and an emergency vehicle approaches, stay where you are until it is safe to proceed, unless you have the option to move to the right and stop. On a 4-lane highway or street without barriers, both sides of traffic should pull to the right. Drivers should always remain a safe distance from all emergency vehicles.
