Master sand sculptor Sandi Castle Stirling will create a seven-foot-high sandcastle to launch this new event and the first day of the newly expanded Children’s Festival. She will be discussing her techniques and conducting a free workshop at 11 a.m.
Stirling’s sand sculptures have won awards at sand-sculpting events across Canada and the United States. For samples of her work, visit The Observatory at Discovery Landing.
Stirling will also judge the second annual Discover Sandcastles Competition along with local authors Sylvia McNicoll (Beauty Returns) and David Bruins (The Legend of Ninja, Cowboy, Bear). The competition is open to all ages and abilities. The adult competition starts at 10 a.m., the family competition at noon, and the child competition at 2 p.m. The award ceremony will feature great prizes for all competitors.
Other activities include Cowboy Ninja Bear book signings and games with author David Bruins, Burlington Green eco-pledges and games, performances by Splash ’n Boots at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., sailing demonstrations with the Burlington Sailing and Boating Club at 1 p.m., and face painting and temporary tattoos with the waterfront ambassadors.
