Burlington Transit is launching the new PRESTO smart card in Burlington. A new and convenient way to travel using multiple transit systems across the Greater Toronto/Hamilton Area (GTHA).

What's happening in Burlington

  • PRESTO equipment is installed on Burlington Transit buses.
  • ADULT riders can begin to use the PRESTO card on BT beginning May  10, 2010.
  • Senior, Student & Child fare categories will be launched in the Fall of 2010.
  • Transfers & Connections: (**NEW** 2-hour transfer window!)

With a PRESTO card you will no longer have to ask the driver for a transfer slip. PRESTO's smartcard technology will recognize your continuous travel each time you tap your card upon boarding and provide you with a 2-hour window to make connections. If you are travelling on Burlington Transit alone, this means you can travel for 2 hours on one fare payment with your PRESTO card.

During the May 2010 roll-out phase for PRESTO, Burlington Transit riders will be able to use their PRESTO card on Oakville Transit as well as GO Transit. Connections to Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) will continue to require paper, pass and/or cash fare transactions until the fall of 2010.

I am a Senior/Student transit rider in Burlington, can I purchase a PRESTO card and use it beginning in May?

  • You may purchase a PRESTO card if you wish, however, ADULT fares will only be recognized during this phase of the launch. Senior/Student/Child fare categories will be launched in the fall.

Where can I purchase a PRESTO card:

  • You can purchase a PRESTO card on-line at www.prestocard.ca (it may take up to 5 business days to receive your new card in the mail.) You may also purchase and perform other transactions with your PRESTO card at the Downtown Burlington Transit Terminal and at GO Rail Stations,  (for further information on PRESTO GO Transit please refer to www.gotransit.ca.)

How do I load value onto my card?

  • At time of purchase, you must load a minimum value (or "e-purse") of at least $10. In addition, when you purchase a new PRESTO card, there is an issuance fee of $6. At any given time, your e-purse has a maximum load value cap at $320. In Burlington, you can load value onto your card using cash, debit or credit at the Downtown Transit Terminal during operating hours (see www.burlington.ca/transit for details.) Value can also be loaded on-line 24/7 at www.prestocard.ca

How do I check the balance on my card?

  • Each time you tap your card onto a PRESTO Fare Payment Device upon boarding, it will display the transaction fee for your ride as well as the remaining balance on your card. In addition, PRESTO devices called "Balance Checkers" are located at the Downtown Transit Terminal as well as at GO Rail Stations in Burlington. Registered card holders can also check their balance on-line at www.prestocard.ca Registering your PRESTO card has numerous benefits, please refer to the PRESTO website for complete details.

Can I use my PRESTO card to pay for the person I am travelling with?

  • To avoid accidental taps and double payments, the PRESTO card has a 15 minute period after the card is tapped during which it will not register another fare.

What are the amounts it will take off for each ride?

  • For travel on BT, each adult ride is $2.50 (the cost of an individual adult fare ticket.) After 36 full-fare rides within the same calendar month, the fare is free for the remainder of that month (the approximate equivalent of an adult monthly pass.) Fees associated with other service providers are individually set. For information on other service providers fares on the PRESTO card, please contact them directly.

Will GO Fare Integration still apply when I ride BT to get on the GO?
