Appleby Ice Centre Expansion Project

Background

On May 25, 2009, City Council approved the Ice User’s Business Plan in support of the Appleby Expansion and Agreements between each of the seven Ice Users and the City of Burlington for financing the debt associated with the construction of the facility. Appleby Expansion consists of two ice pads and community space on the same site as the original twin pad facility.

Ice Users include the following organizations:

  • Burlington City Rep Hockey Club
  • Burlington Girls’ Hockey Club
  • Burlington Lions Optimist Minor Hockey Association
  • Burlington Oldtimer’s Hockey Club
  • Burlington Skating Centre
  • Golden Horseshoe Hockey League
  • Ringette Association of Burlington

Essentially, each Ice Users group has committed to utilize a certain numbers of hours of ice time on an annual basis at an hourly rate that includes a surcharge. The funds generated from the surcharge are used to pay the annual amount attributed to the $4.5 million committed by them. The hourly surcharge concept was initiated when the original Appleby Ice Centre twin pad was build and the Ice Users committed to repay $5.6 million in the same manner. In total, the Ice Users have committed $10.1 million to the construction of four ice pads at the Appleby Ice Centre.

For information on ice rentals and rates, please contact the Parks and Recreation Department at 905-335-7600 ext. 7738 or e-mail at recscheduling@burlington.ca.
