Hasbro Canada has issued a news release to announce that they are launching a new Canadian edition of the Monopoly board game. Instead of the traditional properties such as Illinois Avenue and Pacific Place, Monopoly will reprint the new edition with Canadian city names. Sixty-five cities have been pre-selected to compete in an online voting challenge.
Burlington is not listed as one of the pre-selected cities, however, voters can nominate our city as a “wild card” city. Two spaces on the board will be reserved for cities that are nominated through a wild card vote, which means any city in Canada can be nominated for these property spaces. Once the top 20 city vote is complete, the top 10 nominated wild card cities will also be put to a vote from Feb. 8 to Feb. 21, 2010.
City Council encourages residents to nominate and vote for Burlington to be represented on the Canadian version of Monopoly. The more people that nominate Burlington, the better the chance of getting on the board.
“As one of the best Canadian cities to live in according to MoneySense magazine, Burlington should definitely claim a piece of real estate on the Canadian Monopoly board. I would like to encourage residents to go online and help Burlington claim our spot in board game history,” said Mayor Cam Jackson.
People can nominate and vote at www.monopolyvote.ca. You will see the red box that says “Nominate your own city.” Enter “Burlington, Ontario,” and click on “nominate.” You will then be asked to create an account (if you have not already done so). Enter an e-mail address and password and answer the security question. You will receive an e-mail confirming your registration. Be sure to click on the activation link provided in that e-mail to secure your vote.
Nominations for wild card cities will be open until Jan. 30, 2010. Both nominations and votes can be registered daily.
Check out the competition on the Leaderboard and don’t forget to spread the word to help get Burlington on the board.
