Greening Our Event
Organizers planning the Take Action Burlington - A Community Climate Change Summit at the Royal Botanical Gardens on May 6 and the World Environment Day event at City Hall on June 5 are committed to greening our event as much as possible.
Reducing Paper Use:
- An online registration system. Event promotion through electronic postings (emails, website, etc.). Where posters are necessary, they will be printed on 100% post consumer and 100% chlorine free FSC certified paper.
- Minimize participant handouts by posting presentations online after the event.
- Providing "good on one side only" paper pads on participant tables, if necessary.
- Asking that those with display booths bring minimal paper to hand out to participants.
Minimizing Waste:
- Using reusable and washable cutlery, plates and cups for food.
- Minimizing single serve items.
- Serving water and juice in jugs.
- Setting up a waste station at the event to ensure that waste is properly diverted using BurlingtonGreen youth volunteers.
- Reusing BurlingtonGreen lanyards.
- Providing pens at the tables that are made of recycled paper.
Transportation:
- We encourage participants to use sustainable means of transportation and take transit or carpool with other registrants where possible.
- We will be calculating the carbon generated from travelling to the event and purchasing offsets.
- Directions to the May 6th event.
Other:
- Volunteers will wear organic cotton t-shirts manufactured in Canada and guaranteed sweatshop free at both the May 6th and June 5th event saving 16.5 pounds of pesticides. In addition 50% of the profits from the t-shirts were donated to the Free the Children charity and a tree is planted for every item purchased.
