Revisions to Voter's List
October 25, 2010
is municipal election day in Burlington and this voter information is provided so that your vote can be counted. Exercise your democratic right to elect your representatives to municipal and regional council and for school board trustee! The election determines representation for four years. Your next opportunity will be in 2014. Be counted in 2010!
Are you on the voters list?
The City of Burlington’s Preliminary List of Electors will be available at City Hall in the Clerks Department and at library branches throughout the city from September 1, 2010 until October 25, election day. The Municipal Elections Act does not allow the voters list to be posted in a public place. The voters' list cannot be used for commercial purposes.
The voters list is compiled before each election by the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) which maintains the list through general and targeted enumeration efforts. MPAC forwards a preliminary list of electors to the City of Burlington at the end of August which is then updated and made available for revisions before voting day.
You will still have an opportunity to ensure that you are on the voters list during the revision period later in the year (September, October). Voters listed on the voters list will receive a Voter Information Notice this fall. This VIN will give you information about your options for voting during the advance voting period and on voting day.
Voter Information Notices
The City Clerk delivers Voter Information Notices (VINs) to each name on the Preliminary List of Electors (commonly known as the voters list). Please bring this Voter Identification Notice with you to the poll.
Identification
All voters will be asked for identification before they will be allowed to vote? You will need to show identification to verify your name and qualifying address.
To make changes on the Preliminary List of Electors
You must file an application with the City Clerk. The application forms will be available at City Hall, 426 Brant Street, Clerks Department, first floor, between 8:45 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning September 7, 2010.
An Application to Amend the Voters’ List (Form EL15) can be used to:
- Add the applicant’s name to the list
- Correct the applicant’s information on the list
- Delete the applicant’s or a family member’s name (deceased, moved, other)
- Revise the applicant’s school support status and Canadian citizenship
An application for Removal of Another's Name from Voters' List (Form EL16) can be used to:
- Delete another person's name (deceased, moved, other)
These forms must be personally submitted by the individual applying to make the changes to the voters list. Electronic or facsimile copies are not accepted.
The applicant must make a declaration and sign the form in the presence of the Clerk or designate. By signing the form, the applicant is declaring that:
- they are a Canadian citizen,
- they have attained the age of eighteen (18) on or before the Voting Date, and
- on Voting Day, that they will be entitled to be an elector.
Staff are responsible for making sure that all information is complete before dating and signing the form. The completed forms are used to update the database of electors and a copy is sent to the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) in order to update their database. We need to know:
- Name of elector and their previous qualifying and mailing addresses
- Elector’s current qualifying address and whether they’re an owner, spouse or tenant
- Elector’s birth date, school support
Without this information, we are not able to update the necessary record of information.
There will be a deadline for submitting applications to the Clerks Department. After the deadline, applications to amend the voters' list will be taken to the polling subdivision.
