Soccer Centre of Excellence
Sherwood Forest Park is a potential site for a soccer centre of excellence because of the longstanding tradition of soccer programming in the park, and because it has a full size artificial turf field and two seasonal soccer domes.
A sports centre of excellence promotes competition, training and coaching practices for beginners to elite athletes. A centre of excellence will make Burlington a regional leader in soccer. A centre of excellence could attract sport tourism events such as tournaments and large competitions.
Sherwood Forest Park Soccer Centre of Excellence Feasibility Study
The Sherwood Forest Park – Soccer Centre of Excellence Feasibility Study looks at opportunities to enhance soccer programming and facilities at Sherwood Forest Park to meet community needs, development and growth in the sport of soccer.
The options for Sherwood Forest Park include enhanced soccer fields and a premium soccer field with between 500 and 2,500 permanent spectator seats. In each option temporary seating can be added for specific events. A 10,000 permanent seat stadium is not an option being considered. All options include the rugby field, the baseball diamonds, the woodlot and natural areas, and the children’s playgrounds.
Fairview/Harvester Road Connection
All Sherwood Forest Park Soccer Centre of Excellence Feasibility Study options show the proposed Fairview/Harvester connection through Sherwood Forest Park. This project would link Fairview Street and Harvester Road to improve traffic flow through the city when the city’s growth requires it.
This connection was first identified in 1969 in the Town of Burlington Traffic Planning Report (1965-1985). Since there is the potential to develop this road in the future, this road allowance appears in all options so that no permanent structure is built on the proposed Fairview/Harvester Road connection.
