City of Burlington removes motor vehicle accident recovery fee

BURLINGTON, ON— Burlington City Council has approved the removal of the motor vehicle accident (MVA) cost recovery fee for residents of Burlington as outlined in the Burlington Fire Department report BFD-02-10.

The cost recovery, approved in the 2010 budget, was expected to collect $130,000 in revenue. In a June 14 council meeting, City Council voted to remove the charge for Burlington residents.

All non-residents of Burlington involved in a motor vehicle accident where Burlington Fire responds are charged $350 an incident, which is divided equally among the number of vehicles involved in the accident. This practice has been in place since 1998.

Burlington residents that have received a bill for their involvement in a motor vehicle accident will receive communication from Burlington Fire.

“The Burlington Fire Department is a top fire and emergency service, committed to providing high quality response,” said Chief Shayne Mintz. “Our first priority is keeping people and property safe from harm.”

The Burlington Fire Department includes career staff and volunteers serving the diverse needs of the community. Activities of the department include fire suppression, fire prevention, public education, training and emergency planning.
