Brant Street Pier Update: Decision of Council, February 9, 2011

Burlington City Council today voted to begin work on hiring a new contractor and a new project consultant to complete the Brant Street Pier.

City Council heard that any completion arrangements will ensure that the pier specifications will result in a safe and buildable pier. The city will seek expert advice to make sure the tender package attracts competitive bids. Staff will outline that process in an upcoming report to council.

The city received notice from its contractor, Harm Schilthuis and Sons Ltd., in December 2009 that the contractor was unwilling to complete the pier under the contract terms. In January 2010, the city notified the contractor's bonding company, Zurich Insurance Co., that the contractor was in default of the contract.

The city received notice from Zurich on Feb. 7, 2011, denying Burlington's claim under the bond to help complete the pier project.
