City's Strategic Lands Acquisition Policy in Draft: Your Thoughts Count

In June 2011, City Council received a draft land acquisition policy for the City of Burlington.

The city's draft strategic lands acquisition policy focuses on five key principles: integrity, public interest, fiscal accountability, compliance with regulations, and transparency of process.

Land acquisition includes making fiscally responsible decisions on buying land to ensure green space and infrastructure for today and into the future.

How the city buys land is influenced by many factors, including the city's Official Plan, Halton Region's Official Plan, the Ontario Places to Grow legislation and the Greenbelt Act.

Examples of successful land acquisitions in Burlington include the property recently donated to expand Greenwood Cemetery, land used for New City Park and the property and buildings of Paletta Mansion.

Where to provide input

The city would like your input into its draft Strategic Lands Acquisition Policy.  For related information read the May 2011 report to the city's Budget and Corporate Services Committee.

Part of the policy will be criteria used by the city to help determine how to assess school sites that may close in the future and be offered for sale to the city. To review and comment on these draft criteria, please refer to the October 25 report to the city's Budget and Corporate Services Committee.
