Building By-laws
General Information
This section of the Building Department is responsible for the investigation and enforcement of municipal by-laws related to property standards, lot maintenance, signs, fences, swimming pools, zoning and noxious weeds and other applicable by-laws.
By-law Enforcement officers are assigned specific areas in Burlington to respond to complaints and inquiries. They can mediate and use their conflict resolution skills to come to successful conclusions to these complaints and inquiries. Adult Entertainment Establishment By-law 1- 2008 - A by-law to license, govern and regulate Adult Entertainment Businesses within the City of Burlington.
Building Permit By-law 56-2005 - A by-law under the Building Code Act respecting construction, demolition, change of use, occupancy, transfer of permits and inspections. (Amended and effective March 1, 2010).
By-law 50-2008 - A by-law to amend Building Permit By-law 56-2005, that Section 11.3 "Environmental Impacts" be added to Part 11, "Modified Requirements".
Business Licensing By-law 42-2008 - A by-law to license, govern and regulate businesses in the City of Burlington.
Noise Control By-law 19-2003 - A by-law to prohibit and regulate certain public nuisances and noises within the City of Burlington.
Property Standards By-law 28-2009 - This by-law prescribes the standards for the maintenance and occupancy of all properties in the City of Burlington. Examples of the standards that are contained in the by-law include:
- Structures are required to be structurally sound, all exterior walls, roofs and foundations are required to be maintained so as to reasonably protect against deterioration
- All heating, plumbing and mechanical systems and elevating devices must be maintained and operational and in good working order
Sign By-law 34-2007 - The sign by-law regulates the size, use, location and maintenance of signs and advertising devices within the City of Burlington. This includes, but is not limited to, ground signs, wall signs, directional signs, billboards, construction and portable (mobile) signs. This by-law includes regulations governing the size (sign area, sign height and set backs) location by zoning category and duration (if the sign is to be displayed on a temporary basis).
Swimming Pool By-law 74-2005 - The purpose of the swimming pool by-law is to require the owners of privately owned outdoor swimming pools to erect and maintain enclosures around such swimming pools.
Waste By-Law 117-1976 - The purpose of this by-law is prohibiting & regulating the dumping or disposing of garbage, refuse, domestic & industrial waste and requiring & regulating the cleaning, clearing and draining of property.
Zoning By-law 2020 - This by-law provides for the use of land in the community and establishes regulations related to the permitted uses. Some of the issues the zoning by-law specifically relate to:
- How land may be used
- Where buildings and other structures can be located
- The types of building that are permitted and how they are used
