Zoning By-law

What is Zoning by-law?

The Zoning By-law is approved by Council and deals with land use. Each parcel within the City has a zoning designation and corresponding regulations. The following are examples of what is regulated by the zoning by-law: location of buildings, decks, fences, accessory buildings, building height, lot sizes, parking requirements.

Zoning By-law 2020 is the main zoning by-law. However, there are areas within the City that are regulated by two other zoning by-laws: Zoning By-laws 4000-3 and 1642. As these by-laws are not available on our website, please contact the Planning Department at 905-335-7642 for further details.

The provincial government also plays a role in the land use of the City. Large areas of land located in North Aldershot and along parts of Dundas Street are regulated by the Parkway Belt. In north Burlington, the majority of this area is under the land of control of the Niagara Escarpment Commission.
