Earth Hour
Join the World and Celebrate Earth Hour
Earth HourTM is a global event created by World Wildlife Fund that supports action on climate change. By doing one simple action - switching off lights - you are helping to make a difference to conserve energy and reduce our collective greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. In many cases these changes will also save you money. By participating in Earth Hour, you are sending a message that you want to be part of the solution.
At 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2013 the world will turn off its lights for just one hour - Earth Hour - to show it's possible to take action on climate change. Switching off your lights is just one simple action that you can take to help make a difference.
Be cautious when using alternate sources of lighting such as candles. Never leave the room when a candle is burning and consider using battery operated LED candles.

2007 to 2012
Earth Hour was successfully pioneered in 2007 by WWF-Australia. Over two million Sydneysiders participated, including more than 2,100 businesses, resulting in a 10.2 per cent reduction on the electrical grid, saving 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide - the equivalent of taking about 50,000 cars off the road for an hour.
In 2008, Earth Hour became a global movement and has been celebrated every since with increasing numbers of countries and citizens participating annually.
The City of Burlington was one of many communities that took part in Earth Hour 2008 (March 29 at 8:00 p.m.), Earth Hour 2009 (March 28 at 8:30 p.m.), Earth Hour 2010 (March 27 at 8:30 p.m.), Earth Hour 2011 (March 26 at 8:30 p.m.) and Earth Hour 2012 (March 31 at 8:30 p.m.). Residents were encouraged to sign up for Earth Hour at http://www.earthhourcanada.org/ and commit to turning off all unnecessary lights and electrical equipment on Earth Hour. Additional information was available on the Word Wildlife Fund website for schools and businesses to implement during Earth Hour.
