Burlington Accessibility Awards, May 2012

Celebrating Accessibility

Welcome to Burlington’s first annual accessibility awards celebration.

The Burlington Accessibility Advisory Committee is pleased to welcome The Honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, as well as residents and community partners to the Burlington Performing Arts Centre for our inaugural event.

The City of Burlington is committed to creating and maintaining a community where people and businesses thrive. This commitment is demonstrated city-wide through the practice of universal design that encourages participation and access to facilities, programs, and events. Our city is raising the bar for universal design with the release of the City of Burlington Accessibility Design Standards.

Through the use of these standards, new and renewed facilities, including buildings and outdoor spaces will welcome people of all abilities to fully engage in our community.

A community that is truly livable includes community partners that contribute to a vision of inclusivity, benefiting residents and visitors as well as the business and service providers who attract them. Community partners share the responsibility and opportunity with the municipality to provide inclusive programs and services and contribute to a community in which we all can participate.

Today, at this inaugural awards event, we celebrate the business owners, service providers and community members who demonstrate an exemplary commitment to an accessible, inclusive and respectful community.

The Burlington Accessibility Advisory Committee congratulates the award recipients and thanks the nominators for shining a spotlight on those who have set a positive example of accessibility.
