BURLINGTON HERITAGE MONTH 2013

The Municipalities of Ontario are encouraged by the Province of Ontario to promote and preserve both the Cultural and Built Heritage of the Province through the promotion, education and support of heritage conservation projects through public and private agencies and organizations.  These public and private agencies and organizations have been involved in extensive programs to educate and promote Heritage activities in the Municipalities.

The Heritage Month Committee in conjunction with the Heritage Burlington Advisory Committee has developed a month to highlight, and recognize each group’s participation to further education and promotion of Heritage by way of displays, seminars and presentations to promote Heritage both Cultural and Built Heritage in Burlington.

Properties Designated under the Ontario Heritage Act (OHA)

A heritage property may be designated by a by-law passed by City Council according to procedures defined in the Ontario Heritage Act. Designation provides a measure of protection against demolition and damaging alterations.

Renovations and alterations to the exterior must be approved by Heritage Burlington or City Council. Interior features are usually not included in the designation, and may be altered without any approval process. Heritage Burlington assists property owners during the designation process, prepares a designation report, and advises Council on the reasons for designation.
