City of Burlington Cycling Master Plan Study
The City of Burlington Multi-Use Pathways and Bikeway Plan was completed in 1997 to guide the implementation of the off-road multi-use pathways and on-road bike lanes throughout the City. The Multi-Use Pathways and Bikeway Plan (1997) recognized the bicycle as a commonly used means of recreation and as an alternative means of transportation for shopping, visiting and commuting. The Multi-Use Pathways and Bikeway Plan (1997) was developed with the objective of providing an integrated and linked transportation network for both on-road and off-road cyclists and other users.
The Multi-Use Pathways and Bikeway Plan (1997) included recommendations for design guidelines and an implementation strategy for both on-road and off-road cycling facilities. Since 1997, the City of Burlington has worked steadily to implement segments of the cycling facilities identified in the Multi-Use Pathways and Bikeway Plan (1997). The work accomplished since 1997 has increased the profile of cycling in the City of Burlington and bicycle use, both on-road and off-road, is increasing, as is the demand for cycling facilities. The City is currently updating the 1997 Multi-Use Pathways and Bikeway Plan through a Cycling Master Plan Study.
The Cycling Master Plan (11MB PDF) Study will guide the expansion of the City’s network of on-road bike lanes and off-road multi-use pathways throughout Burlington. It will also recommend policies and programs that will make Burlington more bicycle-friendly and encourage more people to bicycle around their neighbourhood, to school, work or shopping and for fun, fitness, and transportation!
